Round Flat Washers
Definition:
All round, flat washers are flat discs with a centrally located holes, however the choice of a metallic or non-metallic flat washer is dictated by the washer’s application in an assembly.
Metallic Flat Washers
Applications:
Metallic flat washers are used in applications requiring a bearing surface for fasteners to minimize surface wear, as well as, evenly distributing fastener loads to minimize surface deformation when the fastener is tightened. They are, also, used to cover large clearance holes. Metallic flat washers can conduct electricity and provide more compression strength than non-metallic flat washers.

Non-Metallic Flat Washers
Applications:
Non-metallic flat washers are used in applications requiring electrical and thermal insulation or isolation in an assembly. They also provide a sealing function by conforming to the surface configuration. Due to the elastic or plastic properties of some non-metallic flat washers the can provide cushioning between parts in an assembly, as well as protecting surface finishes.
